Microsoft revealed on Friday that Bill Gates co-founder has left its board to dedicate more time to philanthropy. More than a decade ago the 64-year-old stopped participating in day-to-day activities at the company, turning his focus to the foundation he founded with his partner, Melinda.
Bill Gates worked as chairman of Microsoft’s board of directors before early 2014 and, as per the Redmond-based technology giant, he has now stepped away entirely.
Nadella said that in his continuing capacity as a strategic advisor, Microsoft will continue to benefit from Gates ‘ “financial passion and advice”

Gates quit his role as CEO in 2000, turning over reins of the business to Steve Ballmer to devote more time to his charitable foundation. Around the same time Nadella became Microsoft’s third CEO in 2014, he gives up the position of chairman. William H. Gates was indeed a geeky-looking young man who was consistently listed among the richest people in the world when he and Paul Allen co-founded Microsoft in 1975.
Gates grew up with 2 sisters in Seattle. His father William was also an attorney, and his late mother Mary was a United Way International schoolteacher and chairwoman. As a 13-year-old student, he started programming computers and fell madly in love with the machines.
Among the stories heard about Gates is that he tinkered with programming. This is while working on school computers to get himself into classes made up mainly of girls. With the blessing of his parent’s Gates dropped out of Harvard with his late childhood friend Allen. It is to launch “Micro-soft.” A key change was to focus on various “partnerships” on licensing software to computer manufacturers. It culminated in inexpensive computers being accessible to the masses.
When the demand for personal computers expanded Microsoft was the largest software business in the world. His virtual monopoly led to a widely publicized antitrust case. This is in which the corporation manages to avoid a break-up. But had to face years of surveillance by the government.
