Explosion at US Navy Base in California, 21 Injured

An explosion on a US Navy ship moored at a base in California caused a massive fire on Sunday injuring 21 people – 17 of the sailors, according to the naval operations chief. The USS Bonhomme Richard, an amphibious assault vessel, was in port for repairs at its home base in San Diego when the explosion occurred around 8:30 local time on Sunday (15:30 GMT).

Thick smoke from large parts of the 844-foot (257-meter) warship sees billowing, as firefighters on tugboats attempting to contain the blaze using water cannon. The injury with minor injuries taking to the hospital. Several firefighters also reportedly endured burns and inhalation of smoke. Rear Admiral Charles Brown, a Pentagon spokesman for the US Navy, said the wounded sailors had suffered mainly smoke inhalation and mild burns.
