Healthy Gut Tips, How Intestinal Infections Cause IBS??

Often an intestinal infection such as traveler’s diarrhea may cause irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), a chronic inflammation of the intestinal tract, to grow. Scientists aren’t sure exactly how this occurs, but some believe that by affecting the gut nervous system, an infection may lead to IBS.

A recent study has provided new findings about how this is occurring, which can lead to better IBS treatments. The study done with mice looks closely at why neurons die in the gut and how they are usually protected by the immune system.

The researchers explain that the immune system needs to strike a careful balance in a healthy intestine between responding to threats and keeping that response in check to prevent damage. “Inflammation lets the gut ward off an infection but too much can cause lasting damage,” said study researcher Daniel Mucida, Associate Professor at Rockefeller University in the USA. The finding is released in the journal Cell.
