Li Wenliang, Doctor Who Warned About Coronavirus Takes Last Breath

A Chinese doctor took his last breath in a hospital on Friday after infected by the coronavirus. He was the one who alerted everyone about the existence of the new virus. Li Wenliang used to work as an ophthalmologist in Wuhan. During his study, he observed people complaining of symptoms similar to that of the SARS outbreak which killed many in the year 2002-2003.

The 34-year-old doctor informed his colleagues about the new virus on Dec 30. He also asked them to wear protective masks and clothing. But he was investigated by the police for spreading rumors. Later, while treating one of his patients, he traced the virus. Since then he has been referred to as a hero by Chinese internet users.

On the Chinese social media platform called Weibo, the officials confirmed Li Wenliang’s death by posting a brief.

The death toll due to the coronavirus increased to 636. Further, more than 30,000 have been infected. Due to which, the Chinese officials are struggling hard to control the virus from spreading. Till now the virus has spread in more than 24 countries.

As per Weibo post which Li Wenliang wrote lying on the hospital bed, he reveals how he was summoned by the police along with eight other for spreading “rumor-mongering”. Wenliang got infected by the virus in mid-January.

Wenliang added that he was made to sign a letter for making “false comments” which according to the police had “severely disturbed the social order.”

Many Weibo users rebuked the officials for wasting time and trying to hide the outbreak. Due to the announcement of Li Wenliang’s death, people expressed their grief and anger.
