In a shock announcement, by quitting as front-line members, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan stunned the British monarchy on Wednesday. Furthermore, without consulting Queen Elizabeth II, the couple said they’d spend time in North America and rip up long-established relationships with the press. Media reports said Sussex’s Duke and Duchess made their bombshell announcement without notifying either the monarch’s grandmother of Harry or Prince Charles, his boss.
The surprising news follows a tumultuous year for the pair, who said they were struggling in the spotlight and growing apart from the brother of Harry, Prince William. They also reacted badly to the negative coverage of news.
“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen,” they said in a statement released by Buckingham Palace.
“So, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution,” they added.
“We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America.”
The declaration seemed to confuse the royal family. On Wednesday, Queen Elizabeth’s Buckingham Palace issued a statement saying discussions with Prince Harry and his wife Meghan were at an early stage about their intentions to step back from royal duties.
“We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through,” it added.
The mood in Buckingham Palace was known to be one of frustration and even “hurt,” according to the BBC.
Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, are among the royal family’s oldest, core members, and seen as the future of the monarchy along with William and his wife Kate.
Since speaking of the need to be in the spotlight. This is since their fairytale wedding at Windsor Castle in May 2018. Also, after the birth of son Archie 12 months later. From then the couple spent six weeks over Christmas in Canada. At Sandringham, the sovereign’s private estate they skipped the traditional Christmas of the royal family. They instead spend the festive season with Meghan’s mother Doria Ragland.
Rumors that not everything was right with the Sussexes began in October. This is when Harry, sixth in line with the throne, reveales that he and William “on different paths”. He had good and bad days in their relationship.
“We don’t see each other as much as we used to,” he told ITV television’s Tom Bradby. Harry and William have grown to trust with interviews over the years.
“This is a new war of the Windsors — and it’s not over yet.”
The former press secretary of Queen Elizabeth, Dickie Arbiter, told Sky News TV. He states that the approach of the couple was “a succession of doing things their own way. This is the wrong way.”
“Sometimes there’s good press; sometimes there’s bad press. You take the rough with the smooth.”
After announcing plans to step back from royal duties, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex unveiled a new website. Prince Harry and his wife Meghan who made the shocking official statement on Wednesday have detailed plans. This is for their “new working model” as the couple intend to move into a “progressive new role.”
The website details the new media relations policy of the pair. As well as, looking at their charities ‘ future and explaining how they to fund it.
