Roger Stone Gets Help from Donald Trump in his Case

US President Donald Trump has proved his friendship towards his adviser and friend Roger Stone. Pressurizing the US Justice Department, he moved shorter prison sentence for his longtime, Republican friend. This decision has made four prosecutors quit the case.

Trump had posted on Twitter complaining about the unfair treatment towards Stone. Following which, the senior department officials overrode the sentence from nine to seven years on Monday.

For witness tampering, lying to Congress and obstruction, Roger Stone was found guilty in November last year on seven courts.

A Justice Department Official in a new court filing called the recommendation “excessive and unwarranted”. He also added that the department won’t make a recommendation for formal sentencing.

However, the department’s decision did not go well with the Democrats. Stone’s trial began with the investigation of former Special Counsel Robert Muller. It detailed the interference of Russia in the 2016 election for Trump’s benefit.

Trump, however, denied talking with the Justice Department and called it “ridiculous”.

All four prosecutions- Michael Marando, Aaron Zelinsky, Jonathan Kravis, and Adam Jed withdrew their case. Further, Kravis informed the court about his resignation from his federal prosecutor post.

Jessie Liu, a former US attorney’s nomination is withdrawn by Trump for prosecuting Stone.

Talking about Trump’s tweet, a senior Justice Department official states the reporters that the tweet is an “inconvenient coincidence”. He adds that the reason is not to know why the four prosecutors resigned from there post but appear like a protest. Moreover, Amy Jackson, US District Judge is due to sentence Roger Stone on Feb 20.
